What causes neck and back pain?
The annual incidence of back pain in general population is about 20-25%. The public often associates ‘slipped disc’ with back pain. In reality, there are multiple possible pain sources including the muscles, small joints in the spine (facets joint) and intervertebral disc (Figure 1,2).
Majority of patients back pain are harmless and often resolves in few days. However, a detailed assessment by spine specialist is recommended if back pain not resolved within two weeks. Your specialist may recommend magnetic resonance scan (MRI) to examine your spine in details and identify the pain origin. Most of the patients’ back pain can resolves through lifestyle modifications, physiotherapy, focus pilates and various forms of interventional pain procedures.
